Declined Insurance BC? We’ll Read the Letter  /  Cancelled or Lapsed Insurance BC
Cancelled policies · missed payments · gaps in cover

Cancelled or lapsed insurance. The flag every application asks about.

A policy cancelled for non-payment, or simply allowed to run out, follows you onto every application after it. It is fixable, and it is fixed fastest by acting before the gap grows. The question insurers ask is not whether it happened, but what you did next.

What we do

Find the markets that write cancelled and lapsed files, and rebuild from there

Timing

Every uninsured day makes the next application harder. Today beats next week

The short answer

Can I get insurance after being cancelled for non-payment?

Yes, though the market narrows. Cancellation for non-payment is the single question that appears on almost every application, and a yes answer sends the file to insurers who specialize in exactly this. Terms are usually tighter at first, often with payment in full up front, and they improve as clean years build behind you.

What it costs you

The real damage is rarely the cancellation. It is the months of driving, owning or operating uninsured that follow it, because a gap in cover is its own flag, and a loss during the gap is entirely yours.

Honesty is the whole strategy here. The cancellation is recorded and every insurer can see it. The file that gets placed is the one that says so first.

Reading the flag

What a cancellation says to an underwriter.

Non-payment reads as risk

Fairly or not, insurers treat missed payments as a signal about how the whole file will behave. That is why this one question is asked everywhere.

A lapse reads as a gap

Even with no cancellation, time without cover raises the question of what happened during it. The longer the gap, the louder the question.

Cancelled by you is different

Ending a policy yourself, with notice, is not the flag. The flag is the insurer ending it. The application asks which it was, and the difference matters.

The record is shared

Cancellations sit in databases insurers check. Leaving it off an application does not hide it, it just adds misrepresentation to the file.

How the file gets rebuilt.

The path back is boring and it works. Underwriters want to see the pattern broken, not explained.

Close the gap now

Cover in force today, even on tight terms, stops the uninsured clock and starts the clean one.

Expect payment up front

Markets that take cancelled files usually ask for the year paid in full. It is the cost of the flag, and it is temporary.

Let clean years stack

Each renewal paid on time moves the file back toward the standard market. We tell you when it is worth re-shopping.

How it actually happens

A situation we see.

A card expires, the renewal payment bounces twice, and the notice goes to an old address. The first anyone hears of it is a mortgage lender asking why the house shows uninsured. By then there is a cancellation for non-payment on record and a six-week gap. Placed with a market that writes these files, paid annually, the file is back in the standard market two clean years later.

Being straight with you

No lectures. Just the way back.

Life happens to payment schedules.

Job changes, separations, estates, a card that expired during a busy month. We have seen every version and none of them shocks us. The work is not explaining the past to us, it is presenting it properly to an underwriter and getting cover in force again.

What we will not do is place a file on quiet omissions. It always surfaces, and it always costs more than the flag it hid.

Common questions

What people ask after a cancellation.

How long does a cancellation follow me?

Applications commonly ask about the last several years. Its weight fades as paid-on-time years stack up behind it, and the first clean renewal is the biggest single step.

I cancelled the policy myself. Is that the same thing?

No. A policy you ended with notice is not the non-payment flag. Keep the paperwork showing it was your cancellation, and answer the application question exactly as asked.

The cancellation was a mix-up my old insurer caused. Does that help?

Sometimes, if you can document it. A letter from the previous insurer acknowledging the error is worth asking for, and we can tell you how to request it.

Why is everyone quoting me annual payment only?

Because the flag is about payment history, monthly plans are the first thing markets withdraw. It usually returns after clean time. Budget for the year up front once, and plan around it.

Does a lapse matter if nothing happened during it?

Less than a cancellation, but it still gets asked about. A short, explained gap with cover in force now is a manageable story. A long unexplained one narrows the market.

What should I send you first?

The cancellation or non-renewal notice and your best memory of the dates. If you do not have the notice any more, tell us anyway. We can work from the story.

The sooner we start, the shorter the story.

Tell a licensed broker what happened, in your own words. You get a straight answer about what is placeable now and what improves with time, next business day and usually the same day.

Send us the letter.

That one document tells us more than an hour of questions. Being turned down is a market problem far more often than it is a you problem.

English, Punjabi, Hindi, Italian, Cantonese and Mandarin are spoken across our counters.

What happened?
The letter from the insurer
Have it ready. We ask for it the moment we reply. A photo taken on your phone is fine.
Word for word if you have it. “Adverse loss history” and “unacceptable risk” mean very different things to the next underwriter.
What happened, roughly when, and whether it has been fixed. A repaired problem reads completely differently from an open one.
How would you like us to reply?
We will use exactly this and nothing else.
We read it and call you back with a straight answer, including who else could help if it is not us.
